Elderly cyclist killed on Riverside Drive in Council District 7
A distracted driver on Riverside Drive killed a 78-year-old cyclist in District 7. One crash in a week and one life gone show streets that still are not safe.
On Riverside Drive in Manhattan, a northbound sedan hit a 78-year-old man on a bike near 820 Riverside Drive. The crash crushed his hip and leg. He was thrown from the bicycle and died of his injuries. Police listed driver inattention as the cause. The driver walked away unhurt.
This was one deadly crash in seven days in Council District 7. One crash, one death, one serious injury. A quiet week until it was not. A single moment of distraction turned a neighborhood street into a killing ground.
Council Member Robert Jackson can back a 20 MPH local law, concrete protected bike lanes, and traffic-calming redesigns on Riverside Drive and nearby streets.
